OPENSHARK AWARDED US PATENT
FOR EMAIL ATTACHMENT PROCESSING
Openshark’s Key Technology
Vital As Consumer Demand Develops For Mobile Email And
Picture Messaging
SAN JOSE, Calif., —
Openshark, Inc announced today that is has been issued
US patent number 6,598,076 for its MAI Messaging Agent
software platform and related processes.
Openshark MAI Messaging Agent is an infrastructure
software platform that automatically converts popular
email attachments and rich text for viewing on many
devices including mobile phones, PDAs, internet
appliances and personal computers. Users can instantly
view files types that include ZIP compression files, a
variety of graphics types and all versions of Microsoft
Office documents.
Additionally, the resulting message is typically
compressed to a scant percentage of the original size,
without forfeiting content, graphics or quality. The
entire solution resides at the mail server and neither
application software nor plug-in applets are required by
the sender or the client device.
“We’ve worked hard to develop a solution to true
universal accessibility to email and its attachments,”
said Tony Tong, the company’s CTO and founder. “The
simplicity of our design and implementation is what will
make our software so attractive to content providers.
And what that means for consumers is that anyone
anywhere can receive anything.”
“We are pleased that we were granted all 18 claims of
the patent.” Tong continued, “We have been recognized
not only for inventing some of the fundamental concepts
associated with email attachment transcoding, but also
for developing some key tenets of scalability and
reliability that will become increasingly important as
the market starts to deploy carrier-grade solutions to
this problem.
Openshark’s MAI Messaging Agent is currently being
used by Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. as part of the Japanese
conglomerate’s Air Storage mobile email service.
