OPENSHARK SOFTWARE PLATFORM NOW DELIVERS RICH EMAIL ATTACHMENT VIEWING TO MOBILE PHONE HANDSETS

Consumers in US and Japan Can View Rich Email and Attachments From Virtually Any Data-Enabled Mobile Phone Handset

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Openshark Inc., a provider of infrastructure software products for the communication industry, today announced the availability of Openshark® MAI Messaging Agent 1.1, a software application platform that allows viewing of rich email attachments on a variety of wireless and wireline devices. Openshark also released the Japanese Localization Kit, which adds support for over 160 different mobile handsets, Kanji and Katakana characters, Japanese codepage transcoding and localized prompts.

"Mobile email has traditionally been problematic for consumers," said Robert "Bobby" Toda, CEO of Openshark. "In the past, compelling mobile email required dedicated email devices closely coupled to an Enterprise messaging platform like Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Notes. And even then, the experience was often lacking because email attachments and rich text was usually not viewable on those devices. But with MAI Messaging Agent 1.1, wireless carriers and service providers can now offer rich email, complete with attachment viewing to their customers on their existing mobile phones."

Japanese Localization Kit

Taking advantage of Sanyo Electric Corporation's position as a leading supplier of mobile technology, the collaboration of Openshark and Sanyo Electric Corp. has developed the Japanese Localization Kit, the most comprehensive companion released for MAI Messaging Agent.

"We are extremely pleased with our close relationship with Sanyo who handled the local logistics and support that enabled us to develop and verify our output on over 160 different mobile handsets in Japan." said Tony Tong, chairman and CTO of Openshark. "With their dedicated assistance, users can now view pictures, email and attachments on virtually any mobile handset from any of the three major service providers in Japan."

The Japanese Localization Kit is available immediately as a companion to Openshark MAI Messaging Agent 1.1, and includes a tested device configuration database for over 160 mobile phones supported on the networks of NTT DoCoMo, KDDI and Vodaphone KK. Regular updates for new devices are provided with an ongoing software maintenance agreement.

MAI Messaging Agent 1.1

MAI Messaging Agent 1.1 is a highly reliable, scalable and secure solution for email attachment transcoding and viewing that resides solely in the data center. MAI translates each incoming message for optimum viewing based on the specific characteristics of each client device including screen resolution, display color depth, markup language support, and network size limits. MAI supports a variety of devices including mobile phones, PDAs, PCs and Internet Appliances, but requires no software or applets to be installed on the client device. MAI is designed to integrate with all third-party email and messaging servers to provide a transparent user email experience.
